Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the sun and fine weather. But for those of us living with a stoma, it can also be a time of challenges. Stomas are not always comfortable and they can make you feel quite self-conscious. How do you stay cool and comfortable when it's hot outside?

Below we provide our top tips for living comfortably with your stoma during the summer months and how to make things a little easier this season.

4 potential issues for ostomates in hot summer weather

When the weather is hot and humid, it can cause several issues for those with a stoma. The main problems are:

Itchy, irritated skin

Sweating around the stoma can lead to skin irritation. Often it can start with red itchiness around the perimeter of the flange and eventually works its way towards the stoma. If not treated in time, it can lead to a breakdown of the skin, causing pain, bleeding and blisters that weep.

Dehydration

It's important to stay hydrated when it's hot outside — and this can be a challenge for those with a stoma. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you're not thirsty.

Increased body odour

For most people, sweat leads to body odour. This is especially true for those with a stoma as the stoma itself can produce a smell. Be sure to shower regularly and use deodorant to help control any odours.

Swelling of the stoma

Ostomy prolapse can happen when the hot weather causes the stoma to swell.

All of these issues can be quite distressing and make you feel very uncomfortable. But there are things that you can do to help ease these symptoms.

6 stoma solutions to keep you summer ready

Here are our top tips for keeping cool and comfortable this summer:

Wear loose, breathable clothing

Opt for natural fabrics like cotton that will help to wick away sweat and keep you cooler. Avoid tight-fitting clothing as it can put pressure on the stoma and irritate the skin around it.

Use a barrier film

If you're prone to skin irritation, using a barrier film such as the Medi Derma-S Barrier Film Range can help to protect the skin around your stoma. Be sure to reapply as needed, especially after swimming or sweating.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of fluids is important for everyone in hot weather, but it's especially important for those with a stoma. Try to carry a water bottle with you at all times and sip on it throughout the day.

Eat cooling foods

Certain foods can help to cool your body down from the inside out. These include watermelon, cucumber, honeydew, oranges, grapefruit, strawberries and kiwi.

Shower regularly

Be sure to shower at least once a day, and more if needed. Use a mild soap around the stoma area and be sure to rinse well.

Avoid the sun during peak hours

If possible, stay out of the direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, typically around midday.
